Using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST), or the "China Sky Eye," a team of Chinese astronomers have built the largest-ever high-quality catalog of extragalactic neutral hydrogen (HI) and published their groundbreaking achievements in the journal "Science China: Physics, Mechanics and Astronomy." In a significant astronomical breakthrough, scientists have detected the neutral hydrogen line emission from extragalactic galaxies for the first time with the help of the world's largest radio telescope, which could help enrich the understanding of dark matter.
The FAST HI survey team led by Dr. ZHU Ming from the National Astronomical Observatories has been actively scanning the sky ever since FAST formally began operation in January 2020. The team made its first data release on June 19.
